 Overview


Understanding how a single shape can incur a complex range of transformations, while defining the same perceptually obvious figure, entails a rich and challenging collection of problems, at the interface between applied mathematics, statistics and computer science. Numerous applications in computer vision, object recognition, medical imaging and other fields bring additional motivation for researchers to develop adequate theoretical background and methodology to tackle these problems.

The topic "Mathematics of Shape and Applications" has traditionally been a highly interdisciplinary research area, and typically involves mathematicians, statisticians, engineers, computer scientists as well as a wide variety of clinical researchers such as neuroscientists, psychiatrists and radiologists. This is only possible due to the interaction and collaboration among the aforementioned different fields that has resulted in this common interest and the proposed IMS program will further strengthen such a beneficial arrangement. In addition, the proposed IMS program includes a series of tutorials that will allow local participants to quickly grasp the fundamentals of this topic before going into the deeper and more exciting open research questions.

 

Summer School on Mathematics of Shapes

Summer school aims to introduce the theory of shapes to a wide audience through a series of classes.

Topics:

  • Introduction to Lie groups
  • Transformations (rigid, affine, diffeomorphisms), metrics, EPDiff
  • Shapes and representations
  • Shape matching, optimization
  • Statistics on Spaces of Shapes


Workshop on State-of-the-Art Shape Research and its Applications

This workshop will discuss the advanced developments recently made in the field of shape analysis as well as improvements that such methods have brought about in the modeling and analysis of real-life applications.


Workshop on Applications: Biomedical Imaging and Computer Vision
Tutorial will focus on applications of shapes in various disciplines.

  • Computer vision: segmentation and tracking, matching, shape recognition;
  • Medical imaging and analysis: human brain, cardiovascular systems, organ systems;
  • Biological imaging: dendritic spine shape analysis, cancer cells morphology;
  • Geospatial technology: geographic information science, cartography, georeferencing.
